NetEase, the developer behind Marvel Rivals, recently issued a public apology for mistakenly banning a significant number of innocent players. The unintentional bans occurred during a crackdown on cheaters within the game.
The incident, which took place on January 3rd, disproportionately affected players utilizing compatibility layers on non-Windows systems. Many Mac, Linux, and Steam Deck users reported being wrongly flagged as cheaters, despite not employing any cheating software. The developer acknowledged the error, stating that compatibility software, such as Proton on SteamOS, was mistakenly identified as cheating software. NetEase has since reversed the bans and apologized for the inconvenience. Players experiencing further issues are encouraged to contact customer support.
Beyond the accidental bans, a separate issue has emerged within the Marvel Rivals community: the limited availability of character bans. Currently, this feature, which allows players to remove specific characters from selection, is only available to Diamond rank players and above.
This has sparked considerable frustration among lower-ranked players, who argue that implementing character bans across all ranks would improve gameplay balance, encourage strategic diversity, and provide a more enjoyable experience for all players. While NetEase has yet to respond to this feedback, the community's call for a more inclusive character ban system is gaining momentum.
