Hyper Light Breaker's cryptic nature enhances its mystique, leaving players to unravel its mechanics organically. One crucial element often overlooked is the lock-on system, a key to mastering combat. While locking onto a target offers focused engagement, it's not always the optimal strategy. This guide explains enemy targeting and provides insights into when to lock-on versus utilizing the free camera mode in this synthwave roguelite.
To target an enemy, center your view on them and press the right analog stick (R3). The game usually identifies the target automatically, except within dense enemy groups. A reticle will appear, and the view will zoom slightly.
Line of sight isn't necessary; as long as the enemy is visible on-screen and within targeting range, you can lock on.
Locking on alters character movement and camera perspective. The camera remains fixed on your target, resulting in circular movement around them. Fast-moving enemies can cause rapid camera shifts, potentially affecting your input commands during movement.
To switch targets while locked on, simply move the right analog stick left or right. The reticle will automatically jump to the nearest enemy within range.
Press the right analog stick again to cancel the lock-on and revert to the default third-person camera. This can also be adjusted in the settings menu. The lock-on will automatically disengage if you move too far from the target.
Locking on excels in one-on-one combat, particularly against bosses or strong (yellow health bar) enemies—but only after eliminating other mobs. The focused camera can leave you vulnerable to attacks from enemies outside your immediate view.
Free camera mode is generally more advantageous. When facing multiple enemies or easily dispatched weaker foes, locking on is unnecessary and can hinder your situational awareness.
Against mini-bosses or bosses, after clearing surrounding enemies, locking on keeps the target centered. However, cancel the lock-on if additional enemies appear, then resume focusing the boss once they're alone.
For example, during Extraction, you'll face waves of regular enemies followed by a mini-boss. The mini-boss might spawn while other enemies are still present. In this case, maintain free camera mode until clearing the regular enemies, then lock onto the mini-boss for focused elimination.
