The expansive world of Project Zomboid offers a vast playable map that, while walkable from end to end, is best traversed by vehicle, especially outside of challenge runs. Fortunately, many cars in the game are still functional, and if you can't find the keys, hotwiring them is a viable option. Hotwiring a car is simpler than it might seem, requiring just a few button presses, but there are specific prerequisites you need to fulfill before you can start amassing a collection of vehicles. While you don't need the best build to accomplish this, keeping these requirements in mind will be crucial the next time you're tempted to start jacking vehicles.
Successfully hotwiring a car in Project Zomboid allows you to drive it as long as it remains fueled and in good condition, even without the keys. To hotwire a vehicle, you must achieve at least Level 1 in Electrical and Level 2 in Mechanics skills. Alternatively, selecting the Burglar occupation during character creation bypasses these skill requirements, enabling you to hotwire vehicles from the start.
Once your character meets the necessary requirements, follow these three steps on any working vehicle you can access. The hotwiring process is automatic; once completed, press W to start the engine. Remember, not all vehicles will have fuel, so it's wise to have some gas on hand in Project Zomboid.
If you choose not to start as a Burglar, you can manually increase your Electrical and Mechanical skill levels through specific in-game activities. To gain XP in these skills, engage in the following:
Additionally, reading books and magazines can boost your skill levels. These can be found while exploring homes and commercial buildings. Check mailboxes, storage sheds, and bookshelves for readable items during your looting sessions. If you're running a Project Zomboid server as an admin, you can directly grant players skill XP using the "/addxp" command, following the syntax provided in the chat box.
For dismantling or installing components, you'll need a screwdriver or a suitable tool. To work on a vehicle, right-click on a part and select the Vehicle Mechanics option.
