Avowed, slated for a 2025 release, promises a deeply immersive RPG experience, according to its game director. This sneak peek reveals a complex narrative with significant player agency.
Obsidian Entertainment's Avowed offers players continuous opportunities to shape their character and influence the game's outcome. Game director Carrie Patel emphasizes the cumulative effect of every decision, big or small.
"It's about providing players with constant opportunities to express themselves and explore their character's inclinations," Patel explains. She highlights the importance of player engagement, asking, "When are you most engaged? When are you curious? When does your interest wane? What keeps you invested?"
The choices and consequences in Avowed are intricately woven into the exploration of Eora, specifically The Living Lands, where political power is fiercely contested. Patel notes the interconnectedness of the narrative threads.
Players assume the role of an Aedyran Empire envoy tasked with investigating a spiritual plague while simultaneously pursuing their own political ambitions. "Meaningful roleplay comes from giving players things to uncover and explore," Patel states. "It's about defining who you want to be and how the game's situations allow you to express that identity."
Beyond the intricate RPG mechanics, Avowed features strategic combat blending magic, swords, and firearms. Patel emphasizes the diverse gameplay experiences stemming from varied abilities and weapon choices.
Furthermore, Patel confirms a multitude of endings, each a unique culmination of player choices. She reveals a double-digit number of ending slides, with numerous combinations possible. "It's a true Obsidian game," she concludes, "where your ending reflects the sum total of your choices throughout the game, shaped by the content you encountered and your actions within it."
