Yuji Horii: Dragon Quest 12 Details to Be Unveiled Gradually

Fans of the iconic Dragon Quest series can breathe a sigh of relief as series creator Yuji Horii has confirmed that Dragon Quest 12 is still actively in development. In a recent livestream with his radio show group, KosoKoso Hōsō Kyoku, Horii shared that the team at Square Enix is "working hard" on the game. This update marks the first significant news since May 2024, when Horii addressed the tragic losses of the series' character designer Akira Toriyama and composer Koichi Sugiyama, alongside the departure of lead producer Yu Miyake to head Square Enix's mobile game division.

Amid concerns about potential cancellation due to restructuring at Square Enix and a lack of updates, Horii's comments reaffirm the project's ongoing status. He noted that information about Dragon Quest 12 would be released "little by little," keeping fans engaged and informed throughout the development process.

Dragon Quest 12 was initially announced as part of the series' 35th anniversary celebration, marking it as the first mainline entry since 2017's Dragon Quest 11: Echoes of an Elusive Age. Since then, Square Enix has enjoyed success with the Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake, which surpassed sales expectations by selling 2 million copies, showcasing the enduring popularity and demand for the franchise.
