While Magic: The Gathering has been making waves with its high-profile crossovers like Final Fantasy and Spider-Man, the eagerly awaited Tarkir: Dragonstorm set is poised to bring fans back to the beloved plane of Tarkir. Scheduled for release next month, this set promises to be a thrilling addition to the game, and we have an exclusive preview of five cards that are likely to dominate draft tables. You can now preorder the expansion on Amazon.

Explore the gallery below to view all five cards, and continue reading for insights from Wizards of the Coast on their design and the overarching theme of the set.

Magic: The Gathering - 5 New Cards from Tarkir: Dragonstorm

6 ImagesThese five cards form a "cycle," each representing one of Magic’s colors and sharing a common design. They are all low-cost, common-rarity creatures with abilities linked to Tarkir’s three-color clans, and another that converts mana into a color associated with that clan.

Wizards of the Coast Senior Game Designer Adam Prosak explains, “Three-color limited environments require robust mana fixing at all rarities. We aimed to make mana fixing accessible to a variety of decks by introducing multiple designs focused on resolving mana issues. These creatures uniquely allow players to develop their board while simultaneously enhancing their mana, unlike other designs such as tapped lands, which only focus on mana and can put you at a disadvantage.”

In this case, they reflect how the clans have evolved since their last appearance. “The passionate, action-oriented monks of the Jeskai, the Temur using their Whispers magic, Nagas in the Sultai as protectors and avengers of the jungle, Mardu showcasing their military prowess with supporting roles (and the diverse forms dragons can take!), and Abzan clerics working to regrow the lost kin trees.”

PlaySome recent Magic sets have faced criticism for relying too heavily on tropes or thematic gimmicks, even in revisits to previous planes. This makes Tarkir: Dragonstorm's straightforward approach to returning to Tarkir stand out. Senior Worldbuilding Art Director Forrest Schehl acknowledges the importance of such feedback to Wizards of the Coast, stating, “The top-level pitch for Tarkir was set well before the release of Murders at Karlov Manor and the subsequent sets, and it remained unchanged. We aimed to merge Dragons and Clans in a novel way for Tarkir, with Dragonstorms being a pivotal element. Lauren and I felt the pressure to get it right from the start, driven by a desire to authentically expand this beloved plane’s story.”

Tarkir: Dragonstorm is available for preorder now, with the set slated for release in both physical and digital formats on April 11. In-store prerelease events will commence on April 4.
