Sega and Prime Video recently unveiled a captivating teaser for their upcoming live-action adaptation of the beloved Yakuza franchise, Like a Dragon: Yakuza. This article delves into the project, highlighting director Masayoshi Yokoyama's insights.
"Their portrayals are vastly different from the game," Yokoyama stated in a Sega interview at SDCC. "But that's precisely what makes it exciting." While acknowledging the game's perfected portrayal of Kiryu, he praised the show's fresh perspective.
The teaser showcased iconic locations like the Coliseum in Underground Purgatory and a confrontation between Kiryu and Futoshi Shimano.
The teaser description promises a portrayal of "fierce yet passionate gangsters and the inhabitants of Kamurochō," a fictional district inspired by Kabukichō.
Loosely based on the first game, the series explores the lives of Kazuma Kiryu and his childhood friends, offering a side of Kiryu previously unseen in the games.
Addressing initial fan concerns about the adaptation's tone, Yokoyama assured fans that the series captures "the essence of the original."
In his SDCC interview, Yokoyama revealed his primary concern was avoiding mere imitation. He aimed for a fresh, engaging experience for both newcomers and longtime fans.
"Honestly, the result exceeded my expectations," Yokoyama shared. "They've made the setting, created 20 years ago, their own, while staying true to the original story."
He teased a major surprise at the end of the first episode, promising a reaction of "screaming and jumping for joy."
While the teaser offers only brief glimpses, the wait is almost over. Like a Dragon: Yakuza premieres exclusively on Amazon Prime Video on October 24th, with the first three episodes released simultaneously. The remaining three episodes will debut on November 1st.
