Civilization 7's Steam launch has garnered mixed reviews, but Take-Two's CEO remains optimistic. While hardcore fans, who typically gain early access, have voiced concerns regarding the user interface (UI), limited map variety, and missing features, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick believes their opinions will shift positively with continued gameplay.
The game currently boasts a Metacritic score of 81 and numerous reviews exceeding 90. However, Zelnick acknowledges negative feedback, citing Eurogamer's 2/5 review as an example. He attributes initial negativity to the significant changes introduced in Civ 7, particularly the innovative three-age campaign system with simultaneous Age Transitions. This system, unprecedented in previous Civilization titles, involves selecting a new civilization, retaining legacies, and witnessing world evolution at each transition. Zelnick is confident that players will appreciate this unique approach over time.
Firaxis is actively addressing player feedback, promising UI improvements, the addition of multiplayer teams for cooperative play, and increased map diversity. These updates are crucial, as Steam user reviews significantly impact the game's visibility and overall success on the platform. While early access isn't perfect, Zelnick expresses confidence in the game's potential and the company's ability to address the identified shortcomings.
