Nintendo Responds to CES 2025 Switch 2 Leaks: "Not Official"

Nintendo has issued an unusual statement regarding the recent flurry of Switch 2 leaks originating from CES 2025. A company representative confirmed that the images circulating online are not official Nintendo materials. This is noteworthy, as Nintendo rarely addresses leaks directly.

The absence of official Nintendo presence at CES 2025 explains the statement. The numerous Switch 2 leaks, however, have been circulating since late 2024, coinciding with reports of the console entering mass production. A prime example is Genki, an accessory manufacturer, which displayed a purported Switch 2 replica at the Las Vegas event. Images of this replica quickly spread across social media.

Following an inquiry from the Sankei Shimbun, Nintendo responded definitively: the images and videos of Genki's replica are "not official." The company emphasized its non-participation in CES 2025, thereby invalidating any Switch 2 materials shown at the event as official promotional content.

Genki's Replica: Accurate or Not?

While Nintendo refrained from commenting on the accuracy of Genki's replica, the device aligns with previous leaks and rumors, suggesting it might be a fairly accurate representation. The most significant difference from the original Switch is its size (slightly larger) and an additional button below the right Joy-Con's home button, labeled "C." The function of this button remains a mystery.

Genki CEO Eddie Tsai, while unable to clarify the "C" button's purpose, offered additional details. He claims the Switch 2 Joy-Cons will use magnetic attachments instead of sliding rails and function as mouse controls—claims supported by other sources.

Nintendo's Previous Statements and Release Timeline

Nintendo previously stated (twice) that the Switch successor would be unveiled during fiscal year 2024 (ending March 31, 2025). With approximately 80 days remaining, the company still has time to fulfill this promise. Retail availability, however, isn't anticipated until at least the second quarter of 2025. The rumored price point is around $399.
