Star Wars Outlaws Underperforms, Outsold by Jedi: Survivor
Ubisoft's Star Wars Outlaws, the franchise's first open-world title, is facing significant challenges. Released in August 2024, the game, despite initially positive reviews, has underwhelmed both critics and players, particularly regarding its combat and stealth mechanics. Subsequent updates aimed at addressing these issues have proven insufficient to significantly boost player satisfaction or sales.
The game's poor sales performance has negatively impacted Ubisoft's stock prices, plummeting shortly after the game's launch and sparking concerns about the company's future. Ubisoft acknowledged the game fell short of sales projections in September 2024.
Adding to the woes, a recent report indicates Star Wars Outlaws is being outsold by 2023's Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. While precise sales figures remain unavailable, Jedi: Survivor, a critically acclaimed sequel to a successful title, has clearly outperformed Outlaws. In Europe, Outlaws only reached 47th place in 2024's best-selling games.
Several factors contribute to this disparity. Jedi: Survivor benefited from being a highly anticipated sequel to a popular game and received overwhelmingly positive reviews upon its April 2023 release. A later PS4 and Xbox One release further boosted its sales. Conversely, Outlaws has struggled to gain traction, despite ongoing updates and DLC releases.
Post-launch content, including the November 2024 release of "Star Wars Outlaws: Wild Card" featuring Lando Calrissian, and the upcoming Spring 2025 DLC "Star Wars Outlaws: A Pirate's Fortune" featuring Hondo Ohnaka, aim to revitalize the game's appeal. However, whether these additions will be enough to significantly improve Outlaws' performance remains uncertain.
