The previous generation, the Sony XM4, was already an outstanding headphone, but the XM5 introduces key improvements in noise cancellation and comfort. It features a second processor and double the number of microphones dedicated to filtering out ambient noise. The earcups have been redesigned for a snugger fit on the ear, creating a better seal and thus more effective passive noise isolation. The noise cancellation is noticeably superior to the XM4 and outperforms virtually any other noise cancelling headset in its price range.

The Sony WH-1000XM5 also boasts a sleeker redesign with an innovative headband adjustment system. The band is wider for better weight distribution, and the earcup padding now uses a luxurious synthetic leather material that's softer and more comfortable, allowing for hours of wear.
