Former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida recently shared fascinating insights into his early career, including his experience with the legendary Nintendo PlayStation prototype. In an interview with MinnMax, Yoshida recounted his journey at Sony, starting with his work alongside Ken Kutaragi, the visionary behind the original PlayStation. Joining Kutaragi's team in February 1993, Yoshida was among the first to see the Nintendo PlayStation prototype in action.

"Everyone joining Ken Kutaragi's team around that time saw the Nintendo PlayStation prototype first," Yoshida revealed. "It was already functional, and they had nearly completed a game for it. I even played it on my first day."

Yoshida described the game as a space shooter, reminiscent of Sega CD's Silpheed, utilizing CD-based asset streaming. While he couldn't recall the developer's identity or the game's origin (U.S. or Japan), he expressed optimism about its potential survival.

"I wouldn't be surprised if it still exists," Yoshida stated. "It was on a CD, so..."

The Nintendo PlayStation remains a highly coveted artifact, a testament to a potential partnership that never materialized. Its rarity has fueled significant interest in auction and collector circles.

The possibility of this unreleased Sony space shooter resurfacing is intriguing. Considering Nintendo's eventual release of Star Fox 2 years after its cancellation, the prospect of this lost piece of gaming history seeing the light of day isn't entirely far-fetched.
