Ryan Reynolds Explains Deadpool's Unique Path Away from Avengers, X-Men

Ryan Reynolds has cast doubt on the possibility of Deadpool joining either the Avengers or the X-Men, suggesting that such a move would signify the end of the character's journey. In an interview with Time, Reynolds stated, "If Deadpool becomes an Avenger or an X-Man, we're at the end. That's wish fulfillment, and you can't give him that." This comes despite the character's keen interest in joining the Avengers, as seen in the successful film Deadpool & Wolverine, which led to speculation about Deadpool's future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Last month's Avengers: Doomsday cast reveal featured a significant number of veteran X-Men actors, including Kelsey Grammer, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, and James Marsden. This has fueled speculation that Avengers: Doomsday might secretly be an Avengers vs. X-Men movie. Grammer, who played Beast in the Fox X-Men franchise, made his MCU debut in The Marvels' post-credits scene. Stewart, known for his role as Charles Xavier/Professor X, appeared briefly in the MCU in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness as a member of the Illuminati. McKellen, who portrayed Magneto, along with Cumming (Nightcrawler), Romijn (Mystique), and Marsden (Cyclops), are yet to make their MCU debut.

Reynolds' name was notably absent from the Avengers: Doomsday cast list, although Channing Tatum, who played Gambit in Deadpool & Wolverine, was included. Reynolds hinted at a potential surprise appearance in a supporting role, drawing parallels to the positive reception of Wesley Snipes' cameo as Blade in Deadpool & Wolverine.

Looking ahead, Reynolds is currently working on a new project involving an "ensemble," though he remained tight-lipped about the details. This could potentially lead to another Deadpool film rich in cameos, similar to Deadpool & Wolverine. Characters such as Jennifer Garner's Elektra and Dafne Keen's Laura Kinney/X-23, who appeared in the previous movie, might return. Other cast members like Paul Rudd (Ant-Man) and Joseph Quinn (Human Torch) have also shared their excitement. A recent set photo leak sparked further speculation among fans, with some fearing negative implications for the X-Men.

There's also speculation about Oscar Isaac potentially appearing as Moon Knight in Avengers: Doomsday, fueled by his withdrawal from this month’s Star Wars Celebration due to scheduling conflicts. Marvel Studios producer Kevin Feige confirmed at CinemaCon that the Avengers livestream did not include the entire cast of Doomsday, hinting at more surprises to come.
