DC Studios head James Gunn has exciting news for fans: Peacemaker Season 2 is set to premiere on Max on August 21. Gunn shared this announcement alongside a brief snippet of new footage, showcasing John Cena in action. In the teaser, Cena smirks at the camera amidst a backdrop of flames, and he's described as "a superhero now."
In a tweet, Gunn expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "Counting the days until Peace on Earth. I just finished the DI & Mix on the Season Premiere yesterday and wow it’s one of my favorite things ever." This statement highlights his personal investment and excitement for the upcoming season.
Peacemaker Season 2 follows closely on the heels of the July 11 release of Superman, marking the beginning of Gunn's rebooted DCU. It will be the third entry in this new universe, coming after last year's Creature Commandos TV series and this summer's Superman movie.
The revamped DCU, led by Gunn and co-CEO Peter Safran, aims to distance itself from the criticized DC Extended Universe (DCEU), which included films like Justice League, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Man of Steel. However, certain elements from the old universe will carry over into the new. Peacemaker serves as a bridge between the two universes, having debuted in the DCEU with Season 1 and now continuing in the DCU with Season 2.
Gunn has assured fans that "many strands will remain consistent as far as Peacemaker's story goes," although it's not yet clear which specific elements will transition from the DCEU to the DCU. He has confirmed that all of Team Peacemaker will return with the same actors, including John Cena as Peacemaker, Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., Freddie Stroma as Adrian Chase, and Danielle Brooks as Leota Adebayo.
Additionally, Gunn has stated that Peacemaker Season 2 will take place after the events of Creature Commandos and Superman, with the latter's events directly impacting Peacemaker's storyline. This integration ensures a cohesive narrative across the DCU's various projects.
