The C button rumored to be featured on the Nintendo Switch 2 might be dedicated to chat-related functionality, according to recent reports. If true, this could provide crucial insight into one of the most enigmatic aspects of Nintendo's upcoming console's hardware.
Since late 2024, leaks about the Switch 2 have been rampant, with many attributing this to the console's entry into mass production around that time. These leaks consistently show the console equipped with an additional button compared to its predecessor. Labeled with a dark gray "C," this button is typically shown on the right Joy-Con, just below the home button. Despite numerous leaks, the exact function of this button remained a mystery until now.
Emerging from recent datamining efforts on the latest Switch OS version, a new theory suggests the C button's purpose. A Discord server focused on the Switch 2 has uncovered references to a feature code-named "Campus" within Nintendo's newest firmware. This feature reportedly aims to introduce group and voice chat capabilities for Nintendo Switch Online (NSO) subscribers.
The same source indicates that Campus will enable screen sharing and allow chat groups of up to 12 users. Although the codename starts with a "C," if this feature correlates with the new button on the Switch 2, it's more likely that the "C" stands for "chat" rather than "Campus." This discovery challenges the popular fan theory that the C button could be used for casting the Switch 2's screen to other devices.
Since group and voice chats require internet connectivity, it's probable that if the Switch 2 incorporates them, these features would be exclusive to NSO subscribers. However, this remains uncertain, particularly as the original Switch was designed to avoid such functionalities, prioritizing a kid-friendly environment. Reintroducing features like the Miiverse text chat could pose challenges that Nintendo might wish to avoid.
Whether the highly anticipated Switch 2 indeed features a C button, and its purpose, could soon be clarified. According to multiple sources, an official announcement is expected this Thursday, January 16.
