Netflix has officially announced the closure of its interactive fiction games under the Netflix Stories banner, marking the end of a brief but notable experiment in narrative gaming. Despite boasting a solid player base, the decision to cancel Netflix Stories came as a surprise to many. So, what led to this move? Let's dive in to uncover the full story!
According to Variety, this decision is part of a larger strategic pivot at Netflix Games. The company plans to shift its focus towards mobile titles that include party games, kids’ games, mainstream releases, and more interactive experiences designed for TV play. This reorientation signals a clear intent to diversify and possibly strengthen its gaming portfolio in different directions.
Boss Fight Entertainment, the creative force behind the Netflix Stories series, will continue their collaboration with Netflix on other projects, including the highly anticipated Squid Game: Unleashed.
Despite facing some criticism, Netflix Stories maintained a strong position, consistently ranking among the top-played titles within the Netflix Games catalog. Recent reports indicate it's currently fourth in the Netflix Games top 10 carousel, which is based on playtime rather than downloads.
Looking ahead, the final interactive title in the Netflix Stories lineup will be Love Is Blind: NYC. Once its rollout concludes, no further development will occur for new Netflix Stories games. This announcement follows closely on the heels of the Netflix Stories app teasing its next release, The Love Contract, originally slated for April 8th. Unlike its predecessors, The Love Contract was to be an original romance story, not based on existing Netflix IP. It would have followed the journey of an actress navigating the complexities of fame, scandal, and fake dating amidst a Hollywood star and a billionaire. Unfortunately, this project has been scrapped.
While the future development of new titles has been halted, existing Netflix Stories games will remain accessible. Fans can continue enjoying titles like Love Is Blind, Emily in Paris, Money Heist, Love Is Blind: Winter’s Kiss, Perfect Match, Sex Education, Selling Sunset, Sweet Magnolias, Virgin River, and The Perfect Couple. However, planned sequels for popular series such as Outer Banks and Ginny & Georgia have been canceled.
That's the latest on Netflix Stories! If you're a fan of Netflix shows and want to experience these interactive stories, you can still find the games on the Google Play Store.
