When bought on its own, Mario Kart World is priced at $79.99, which is $10 more than the standard price for AAA titles on PlayStation and Xbox this generation. While I'm not thrilled about the price increase between console generations, I understand that game development costs are soaring. Hopefully, the expansive nature of Mario Kart World will justify the additional expense.

What Is Mario Kart World?

Mario Kart World is poised to be the most ambitious Mario Kart game to date, featuring an open-world format inspired by the likes of the Forza Horizon series. In Grand Prix mode, you can seamlessly transition from one race to the next, driving from the end of one track directly to the start of another.

The game's tracks are dynamically affected by weather and time of day, which can influence your visibility and tire grip during races. You're not confined to the tracks either; Nintendo states you can drive "virtually everywhere" in the open world. Each race supports up to 24 drivers, making it the largest field in any Mario Kart game.

A new mode, Knockout Tour, challenges you to race across the open world, passing through checkpoints with specific placement requirements. Fail to meet these, and you'll be knocked out of the race.

For a more relaxed experience, Free Roam mode allows you to explore the world at your own pace, team up with friends, and capture memorable moments with in-game photography.
