The LEGO Mario Kart: Mario & Standard Kart set, currently available for preorder, is a build that appeals to LEGO enthusiasts of all skill levels. Casual builders will enjoy the vibrant primary colors and the set's chunky, user-friendly pieces, making it an instant hit. Out May 15### LEGO Mario Kart – Mario & Standard Kart
8$169.99 at LEGO StoreThe LEGO Mario Kart: Mario & Standard Kart set falls under the broader LEGO Mario category, suggesting the potential for more expansive Kart sets in the future. While smaller, playset-scaled Kart sets are already available (see at Amazon), there's certainly a market for larger models featuring characters like Luigi in a Sports Coupe or Princess Peach on a Cat Cruiser.

This set comes in 17 bags and consists of two separate builds. The Standard Kart is the first to be assembled. You start by creating a LEGO Technic mesh, secured with pins and reinforced with bricks, to form the Kart's floorboard. Next, you attach the body shell components using rods and clamps, including rockets/exhaust pipes, side panels, and a steering mechanism that doubles as the Kart's front exterior.
Special attention is given to the steering mechanism, which elegantly blends form and function. It's attached to the front of the set with clamps and folds over the hood like a storm door. When you turn the steering wheel, the front wheels move in sync, enhancing the set's interactivity.
Despite its seemingly simple appearance, constructing the Kart involves numerous meticulous steps that contribute to its sophisticated finish. The build process is both engaging and rewarding, merging complexity with a playful aesthetic.
Following the Kart, you assemble Mario, whose build process mirrors that of The Mighty Bowser set from three years ago. You start with the torso, utilizing ball-and-socket connections for the extremities, followed by the legs, arms, and finally, the head and hat. The hat, in particular, is intricate, featuring two separate pieces that create its iconic bent shape.
Building Mario allowed me to appreciate his lesser-known details, like the hair peeking out from under his hat, the markings on his gloves, and the rolled-up cuffs of his jeans. It's akin to piecing together a jigsaw puzzle of a famous painting, where you discover nuances you might otherwise miss. My 10-year-old son and I found this experience enriching, much like our puzzle-building sessions.
However, Mario is not detachable from the Kart; his torso directly anchors to a gray plate attached to the Kart's seat. While this design choice is understandable, it's also a bit disappointing. Many LEGO enthusiasts might attempt to modify the set to make Mario stand alone, turning it into a fun DIY project.
Nevertheless, the final display of the set is stunning. The Kart sits on a buildable stand that can be tilted and rotated, allowing for dynamic posing. I've positioned Mario to appear as if he's gripping the steering wheel with one hand and celebrating with the other, almost hearing his signature "Whoo-hoo!"
If LEGO continues in this direction, fans can look forward to more exciting additions. Two of the most impressive LEGO sets in recent years have been Mario-themed, including The Mighty Bowser from 2022 and The Piranha Plant from 2003. The Mario & Standard Kart set upholds this high standard, balancing build quality with striking visual appeal.
