Jason Isaacs Suggests Unexpected Actor for Lucius Malfoy in HBO's Harry Potter Series

Though Thailand is a world away from the magical halls of Hogwarts, Jason Isaacs, known for his role as Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter films and now starring in The White Lotus Season 3, recently shared his intriguing casting suggestion for HBO's upcoming Harry Potter TV series. In an interview with Variety, Isaacs proposed none other than Meryl Streep to take over his iconic role.

"Meryl Streep," Isaacs declared confidently. "She can do anything, that woman. There's literally no limit to what she can do." He referenced Streep's versatile acting history, noting her portrayal of an elderly male rabbi in the HBO miniseries Angels in America, showcasing her ability to embody diverse characters convincingly. Indeed, Streep's track record suggests she could bring a unique interpretation to Lucius Malfoy.

However, Isaacs humorously declined to offer any advice to Streep or any potential successor, stating, "I wouldn't have any advice at all. Why would I bother? I know some of the people they're casting already. They're brilliant actors. It's going to be fantastic, and the last thing they need is advice from some old fart like me."

Isaacs first brought Lucius Malfoy to life in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and continued to portray the character through to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. As for the new adaptation, only one casting has been officially confirmed: John Lithgow will step into the shoes of Albus Dumbledore, a role previously filled by Richard Harris and then Michael Gambon.

Rumors are swirling around other key roles as well. Black Mirror star Paapa Essiedu is reportedly in talks to play Severus Snape, a character originally brought to life by Alan Rickman, while Jessica Jones star Janet McTeer is allegedly close to being cast as Minerva McGonagall, famously portrayed by Maggie Smith. However, these casting choices have yet to be officially confirmed.
