PGA Tour 2K25: A Solid Swing, But No Hole-in-One
A hypothetical poll asking which pro sports game series 2K should tackle next would likely crown an NFL 2K revival as the clear winner. However, 2K is instead teeing off with PGA Tour 2K25, and after a few hours, it's a promising outing.
HB Studios, the developer, boasts a decade of golf game experience (starting with The Golf Club), and that expertise is evident. While not the most visually stunning sports game, and lacking an exhaustive roster of real-world courses (though it does include the PGA Championship, US Open, and The Open Championship), 2K25 is undeniably fun. Minor issues, like occasional framerate hiccups on PC, are easily overlooked.
The improved EvoSwing mechanic is a highlight. Controller users will appreciate the right stick control – pull down to wind up, push forward to strike. Difficulty levels adjust the swing's sensitivity, catering to both casual and hardcore players. A "Perfect Swing" mode offers a more forgiving experience, while higher difficulties punish imprecise inputs. Lateral movement on the tee box adds strategic depth. Playing as Tiger Woods, this year's cover athlete, certainly enhanced the initial experience.
MyCareer mode receives a significant upgrade with narrative elements. I even landed a movie role alongside Christopher McDonald (though not as Shooter McGavin due to licensing). Choices impact stat boosts, and earned VC unlocks gear that further enhances abilities. Added Quests, refreshed regularly, provide ongoing goals.
The MyPlayer creator allows for reasonable character customization, and the inclusion of skill trees is a welcome addition. Multiplayer options, including ranked matchmaking and cross-platform Societies, promise engaging social play, reminiscent of classic golf games like Links 2004. Asynchronous multiplayer caters to players with varying time zones.
PGA Tour 2K25 excels without being exceptional in any single area. This makes it hard to generate overwhelming excitement, but it's a solid contender for golf enthusiasts and those seeking a relaxed gaming experience. A playable demo is currently available.
