Recent reports from Niko Partners, a leading video game market research firm, suggest a mobile version of Final Fantasy XIV is in development, a joint venture between Square Enix and Tencent. This article explores the details of this potential collaboration and its implications.
Niko Partners' latest report details a list of games approved for release in China by the National Press and Publication Administration (NPPA). Among these approved titles is a mobile version of Square Enix's renowned MMORPG, Final Fantasy XIV, reportedly developed by Tencent. Other notable titles on the list include a mobile and PC version of Rainbow Six, and mobile games based on Marvel Snap, Marvel Rivals, and Dynasty Warriors 8.
While rumors of Tencent's involvement in a Final Fantasy XIV mobile adaptation circulated last month, neither Tencent nor Square Enix have officially confirmed this project.
According to Niko Partners analyst Daniel Ahmad's August 3rd tweet (X), the FFXIV mobile game is anticipated to be a standalone MMORPG, distinct from the PC version. However, Ahmad emphasizes that this information stems primarily from industry speculation and lacks official verification.
Tencent's significant presence in the mobile gaming market makes this partnership with Square Enix a plausible move within Square Enix's broader strategy. In early May, Square Enix announced its commitment to a "multiplatform strategy" for its key franchises, including Final Fantasy, suggesting this mobile venture aligns with their expanded vision.
