Seven years after its initial release, Destiny's iconic Tower social space has received an unexpected and unexplained update, featuring festive lights and decorations. This surprise, discovered by players on January 5th, has sparked considerable speculation within the community.
While Destiny 2 has become Bungie's flagship title, the original Destiny remains accessible. Bungie regularly adds legacy content from the first game into its sequel, but this latest Tower update is entirely unannounced and seemingly accidental. Players found Ghost-shaped lights reminiscent of past seasonal events like The Dawning, although the overall atmosphere differs, with no snow and unique banners. Crucially, no new quests or in-game notifications accompany the decorations.
A Forgotten Event?
The leading theory points to a cancelled event, tentatively titled "Days of the Dawning," originally planned for 2016. Reddit user Breshi, among others, has highlighted the striking similarities between unused assets from this scrapped event and the current Tower decorations. The prevailing belief is that a placeholder future date was assigned to the event's code, leading to its unexpected reappearance years later. Bungie likely assumed the original Destiny would be offline by this time.
As of this writing, Bungie has offered no official comment. The update's temporary nature is expected, given the shift in focus to Destiny 2 in 2017, when all live events transitioned to the sequel. Until Bungie removes it, however, players can enjoy this unexpected blast from the past.
