Days Gone Remastered was a highlight of Sony’s recent State of Play showcase, but the announcement has stirred some discontent among PlayStation Plus subscribers due to its $10 upgrade policy.
Sony has specified that the $10 upgrade to the remastered version on PlayStation 5 is exclusively available to owners of the PlayStation 4 disc or digital copy of Days Gone. Unfortunately, this means that those who obtained the game through the PS Plus subscription service, including the now-defunct PS Plus Collection and the Essential monthly game in April 2021, are not eligible for this discounted upgrade. Instead, they must pay the full $49.99 to access the new PS5 version.
The $10 upgrade restriction has prompted significant backlash from PS Plus subscribers online. A notable thread on the PlayStation Plus subreddit is filled with comments from frustrated users. For instance, squarejellyfish_ pointed out, “They would actually have made a decent chunk of change if PS Plus players were eligible, even if most didn’t want to play it they’d at least be interested in paying 10 bucks to try it out for an hour or two.” Similarly, teckn9ne79 stated, “They should let Essentials upgrade cause I would pay the $10, but I will not buy it any other way. I will stick with the one I got.” dredizzle99 echoed the sentiment, saying, “There's no way I'm paying full price for this, but I'd happily pay for the upgrade at least just to check it out. Surely the majority of people that have it on PS plus are thinking the same thing, so they're basically losing all the potential sales from them.” jackanyon95 added, “They gave away the game for free so every copy is an extra £10/$10 they wouldn't have had but they decided to be awkward instead and cut out half the owner base. I'm not paying full price, it didn't even need a remaster.”
Despite the uproar, some PS Plus subscribers understand Sony's financial strategy behind this decision, acknowledging that the company likely conducted a thorough analysis to determine the most profitable approach. However, Sony has been labeled "stingy" by some of its loyal fanbase, who were hoping for a more generous upgrade offer from PlayStation.
