The acclaimed series Shōgun, which swept 18 Emmy Awards and 4 Golden Globes, is set to return for a highly anticipated second season. Cosmo Jarvis, who portrays the pivotal character John Blackthorn, has confirmed his return and will also step into the role of co-executive producer for Season 2, as announced in an official FX press release.
Hiroyuki Sanada, who plays the lead role of Lord Yoshii Toranaga, signed on for the new season last May following the show's renewal. Originally conceived as a limited series, Shōgun has now elevated Sanada to the position of executive producer, a role he held during the first season. Production for Season 2 is scheduled to commence in Vancouver, the filming location of the original series, starting in January 2026.
FX has described the upcoming season as "a wholly original new chapter" that diverges from the adaptation of James Clavell’s novel seen in Season 1. The network provided insight into the narrative arc spanning both seasons:"In Season 1, Lord Yoshii Toranaga (Sanada) navigated a perilous political landscape as his adversaries within the Council of Regents conspired against him. The arrival of a stranded European ship introduced John Blackthorne (Jarvis), whose strategic insights shifted the balance of power in Toranaga’s favor, ultimately helping him triumph in a pivotal civil war.
"Season 2 unfolds a decade later, continuing the epic and historically-inspired journey of these two men from disparate worlds, whose destinies remain deeply intertwined."
Fans eagerly await new episodes, with hopes set on a release by the end of 2026. Until then, anticipation builds as we look forward to the next chapter of this remarkable series.
