Sid Meier's Civilization VII: A VR Revolution on Meta Quest 3
Civilization VII (Civ VII) is making its virtual reality debut this Spring 2025, exclusively on the Meta Quest 3 and 3S headsets. This marks the franchise's first foray into VR and mixed reality gaming, as announced by 2K Games and Firaxis Games at the Civ World Summit on February 8, 2025.
Dennis Shirk, Executive Franchise Producer, expressed excitement about launching Civ VII and ushering in a "new era of strategy excellence." Chris Pruett, Meta's Director of Games, highlighted the timing of the release, stating it's "an awesome time for mixed reality," and emphasizing that Civ VII VR offers a genuine Civilization experience tailored for dedicated strategy enthusiasts.
While Civ VII will launch on various PlayStation consoles, a PSVR2 release is not currently planned.
Immersive Gameplay and Multiplayer Options
Civ VII VR innovates with a "Command Table" interface, allowing players to view their world from various perspectives, mimicking a tabletop game experience. The game supports both immersive VR and mixed reality modes, seamlessly switching between them. 2K Games describes the VR experience as being transported to "an ornate museum," while mixed reality adapts the Command Table to the player's physical space.
Single-player, co-op, and competitive multiplayer modes are all included. Up to four players can engage simultaneously using Meta Quest 3 or 3S headsets, combining AI opponents with human players for dynamic gameplay. Players can even see each other in VR and MR across the Command Table. Online multiplayer requires a 2K and Meta account.
Addressing Player Feedback
Firaxis Games is actively addressing player feedback from Civ VII's early access period (February 6, 2025, for Deluxe and Founder's Editions). The official Twitter (X) account acknowledged community concerns, particularly regarding the user interface (UI). The team is prioritizing UI improvements, focusing on intuitiveness, map readability, and overall polish.
Future updates will include community-requested features such as multiplayer teams and diverse map types. A quality-of-life update in March is promised, addressing UI adjustments, AI balance, diplomacy, crises, and bug fixes.
Civilization VII VR's release is anticipated in Spring 2025 for Meta Quest 3 and 3S, while the standard Civ VII launches worldwide on February 11, 2025, across PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch, and PC. For more details, visit our Civilization 7 page.
