All Romance Options in Baldur's Gate 3
### Romance in BG3 Explained:
In Baldur's Gate 3, romance is accessible to all players regardless of their character's gender. Every romance option is open to you, no matter your Tav's characteristics. The game offers both short-term and long-term romantic relationships, with the dynamics varying based on the character you choose to pursue. Some companions offer the possibility of a one-night stand, while others require a more prolonged courtship.
It's important to note that certain actions can lock you out of multiple romance paths. Timely completion of specific tasks is crucial, and some characters may not appreciate you spreading your affections too thinly.
Most companion NPCs in Baldur's Gate 3 can be romanced, and once you commit to a relationship, your interactions with them will evolve significantly. This means you won't be able to experience every romance in a single playthrough. We delve into the specifics of each relationship in our detailed guides below.

How to Romance Shadowheart in Baldur's Gate 3
Shadowheart is often the first romance path you'll encounter in Baldur's Gate 3, given her early introduction and the interest she shows if you manage to increase her approval rating. Whether you choose to pursue a romance with Shadowheart is up to you, but doing so can enrich her storyline significantly.
Shadowheart can be romanced both long-term and short-term, with opportunities in every act of the game. Starting in Act I, you can maintain a relationship with her throughout the game.
How to Romance Shadowheart:
- Keep Shadowheart in your party to boost her approval more easily.
- Increase her approval by showing kindness, opting for non-violent solutions, and respecting her privacy. Supporting her against Lae'zel early on can give you a significant approval boost.
- Once your approval is high enough in Act I, look for the "missed a chance to connect" dialogue. Alternatively, wait for the party after rescuing Halsin. If you've shown interest, you'll likely see an exclamation mark over her head during the party. Accept her invitation to share a bottle and choose to spend the evening with her. During your walk, avoid dialogue options that show disinterest, and the night should end with a kiss. After this, you can confirm whether you want a longer-term relationship.
- In Act II, you can side with either Selune or Shar and continue your romance. Support her new look if you choose Selune, or wait for a nighttime event if you go with Shar.
- In Act III, complete Shadowheart's quest regardless of her chosen deity. This will lead to a final nighttime event involving a swim, with clear dialogue options guiding you to a special scene.
Shadowheart Romance Special Notes:
- Shadowheart may end the relationship if you pursue other romances, though this isn't always the case. In Honor Mode, it's safest to stay committed to her. Save before exploring any open relationships.
How to Romance Gale in Baldur's Gate 3
Gale, the wizard from Waterdeep, is open to a romantic relationship with Tav. His significance to the game's plot makes romancing him a compelling choice.
How to Romance Gale:
- Rescue Gale from the portal northeast of the crash site.
- Fulfill Gale's requests to consume magical items, which occur up to three times in Act I.
- Participate in Gale's magic lesson in Act I, choosing romantic dialogue options. Avoid being mean, as it can close off future options.
- Be supportive during the Elminster cutscene before transitioning to Act II, ensuring you care about Gale's fate.
- In Act III, keep Gale alive and read "The Annals of Karsus" in Sorcerous Sundries. Speak to Gale before taking a long rest, choosing "Close your eyes," "Kiss Him," and "You're already everything I need you to be" for a romantic scene.
Gale Romance Special Notes:
- Gale does not tolerate an open relationship and will be unhappy if you romance others.
How to Romance Astarion in Baldur's Gate 3
Astarion's charm and wit make him a popular choice for romance. He's also one of the more open-minded partners in the game.
How to Romance Astarion:
- Increase Astarion's approval by adding him to your party early and choosing self-serving options. He appreciates sarcasm and generally dislikes helping others without reason.
- Allow Astarion to drink your blood to boost your relationship.
- During the party, ensure you speak with Astarion, choosing dialogue options like "...saving lives is awful?", "...goblins would have thrown a wilder party", "...what's your idea of a little fun?", and "...let's do it. I'll see you later." This unlocks the first major romance scene. Let him bite you to further increase approval.
- After the first scene, show interest in the scars on his back and ask about their Infernal writing.
- In Act II, take Raphael's deal to learn more about Astarion's scars. After completing this, Astarion will visit you at night. Choose "...about your undying love for me?", "So do I. More than anything.", "I care about you. Deeply.", and "You mean a great deal to me. No matter what you are going through."
- In Act III, complete Astarion's quest. You can choose whether he completes the ritual. Supportive dialogue leads to a special scene, and allowing the ritual can turn you into a vampire.
Astarion Romance Special Notes:
- Astarion is open to you having romantic encounters with others without getting truly angry.
How to Romance Karlach in Baldur's Gate 3
Karlach is a beloved romance option, though initiating it can be challenging. She's highly sensitive about fidelity once in a committed relationship, but her storyline is deeply rewarding.
How to Romance Karlach:
- Side with Karlach against the fake Paladins of Tyr and add her to your party from the start to build approval. She values kindness, understanding, and open-mindedness, but also supports violence in the service of helping others.
- Collect Infernal Iron as soon as possible and bring it to Dammon at the Emerald Grove. This helps Karlach's Infernal Engine, setting the stage for your relationship. After Dammon's work, express disappointment about not being able to touch her, and confirm that you want to.
- During the party, speak to Karlach regardless of an exclamation mark. Express your feelings, and later in the evening, tell her you want to find a way to kiss her. The next morning, throw water on her to cool her off temporarily and try to kiss her. She'll be okay with you seeing others until her heart is fixed.
- In Act II, find Dammon at the Last Light Inn and use every piece of Infernal Iron to tune her up.
- In Act III, take Karlach on a date.
Karlach Romance Special Notes:
- Karlach will get angry if you sleep with other characters. If she does, avoid sarcasm and be sincere to potentially regain her trust.
- After fixing her heart, you can enter into a long-term relationship with unique dialogue options.
How to Romance Wyll in Baldur's Gate 3
Wyll's romance can deeply enhance his storyline, despite him not being the first choice for many players.
How to Romance Wyll:
- Increase Wyll's approval by acting heroically, helping others, and supporting him in his quests. Show empathy towards his struggles with Mizora and his father.
- Rescue Halsin and the Tieflings at the Emerald Grove. If your approval with Wyll is high enough, he'll be available to spend the night with during the party.
- In Act II, after a Long Rest, you'll find Wyll dancing. Follow the romantic prompts during this encounter.
- In Act III, help Wyll save his father and complete his task with the dragon Ansur to unlock the final romantic encounter.
How to Romance Lae'zel in Baldur's Gate 3
Lae'zel's interest in the player is evident early on. You can choose between a one-night stand or a longer-term relationship.
How to Romance Lae'zel:
- Increase Lae'zel's approval through decisive action. She values quick warriors and direct confrontation over persuasion or deception, though she approves of intimidation.
- Once her approval is high, mention her different look at you in camp, which can lead to a one-night stand.
- Maintain her approval, and she'll visit you at night during Act II, asking for a duel. Whether you win or lose, you'll win her heart.
- In Act III, the outcome depends on whether Lae'zel sides with Vlaakith or Orpheus. Siding with Orpheus can lead to being seen as a couple in the ending sequence.
Lae'zel Romance Special Notes:
- Lae'zel will end the relationship permanently if you cheat on her after the duel.
How to Romance Halsin in Baldur's Gate 3
Halsin's romance is highly sought after, especially due to his unique charm and connection to nature.
How to Romance Halsin:
- Ensure you fully lift the Shadow Curse before concluding Act II, or you'll be locked out of romance options.
- Rescue Halsin from the Goblin Camp to make him available as a companion later.
- Halsin becomes a companion in Act II after helping him locate Thaniel.
- Keep Halsin in your party and increase his approval by showing kindness, reverence for nature, and promoting fairness.
- Exhaust all of Halsin's dialogue options daily, focusing on his past lovers.
- Once his approval is high enough, Halsin will visit you at night. He'll ask about other relationships; Shadowheart and Astarion will be okay with it, but Karlach and Gale will not.
How to Romance Minthara in Baldur's Gate 3
Minthara's romance is unique, often aligning with an evil playthrough. It requires betraying your party and the Emerald Grove.
How to Romance Minthara:
- Instead of attacking the Goblin Camp, return to Minthara without engaging in combat. Side with her against the Emerald Grove.
- After defeating the grove, tell Minthara it was an honor to fight beside her, 'Embrace the change,' and open your mind. This leads to her visiting your camp.
- At the goblin party, tell Minthara you are hers. Go to bed, and she'll join you. If you fail the persuasion check, she'll attack you.
Since the official release, some players claim you can knock Minthara out at the Goblin Camp and rescue her from Moonrise Towers in Act II, allowing her to join your party. We have not tested this yet and will update once we have more information.
Minthara Romance Special Notes:
- Choosing the evil path will drastically alter your game experience, causing tension with other party members.
All One-Off Romance Options in Baldur's Gate 3
### How to Romance Mizora:
- Ensure Wyll is in your party and do not side with Minthara.
- Rescue Mizora from the Mind Flayer Colony below Moonrise Towers in Act II.
- In Act III, find Mizora in the audience chamber at Wyrm's Rock Fortress before Gortash's coronation. Discuss Duke Ravengard, and she'll mention visiting your camp.
- Rest until you see an exclamation mark over her head and speak to her. When she talks about desires beyond this plane, ask, "Sounds delicious, what are you suggesting?" and then, "Smile."
- Mizora will visit you at night, triggering a one-off romance scene.
How to Romance the Guardian:
- Choose to protect the Guardian/Emperor between Act II and Act III.
- Evolve into Half-Ilithid to boost approval (not required but helpful).
- Visit the Emperor's old hideout to learn about his past lover.
- After discovering his past, the Emperor will visit you. Choose to hold their hand.
- The Emperor will visit again, being more forward. Ask if they're flirting and react positively to their advances, triggering the romance scene.
How to Romance the Drow Twins:
- Visit Sharess' Caress in Wyrm's Crossing in Act III.
- Speak to Mamzell Amira near the bar. You can either complete a quest for her or pay directly to access the twins.
- Go to the chambers as directed to begin the scene. Avoid involving Gale or Karlach if you're in a relationship with them.
How to Romance Haarlep in the House of Hope:
- Reach the House of Hope, Raphael's home.
- Cross the 'Mystic Force Curtain' to enter the Boudoir and meet Haarlep, an Incubus. They'll offer a romantic encounter, which can be humorous but may have consequences if you're in a relationship, especially with Karlach.
How to Romance Naoise Nallinto:
- Visit Sharess' Caress in Wyrm's Crossing.
- Find the locked door marked by a green lantern and ivy-covered wall at the top of the stairs. Pick the lock or get the key from Mamzell.
- Enter to find Naoise and Jara. After defeating the Mindflayer that Jara becomes, speak to Naoise. Follow her cues for a brief romantic scene, granting you the Rapture buff until your next long rest.
