Matajuegos has exciting news for fans of innovative gaming experiences: their surrealist documentary game, Atuel, is set to launch on PC and Android later this year. The Steam page is now live, allowing eager players to pre-register, while the Google Play listing will be available soon.
Hailing from Argentina, Matajuegos is an indie cooperative that first introduced Atuel on itch.io back in September 2022. The game quickly caught the eye of gamers and critics alike for its unique fusion of documentary storytelling, experimental gameplay, and breathtaking dreamlike visuals.
Following its initial release, Atuel made waves in the gaming world by winning the ‘Innovation in Experience Design Award’ at IndieCade 2022, along with numerous other accolades for its groundbreaking approach to documentary gaming. The game has also been showcased at prestigious venues such as the Marché du Film at Cannes and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
Curious about what Atuel looks like? Take a peek at the trailer below:
Atuel immerses players in the stunning yet climate-challenged Atuel River Valley in Argentina. More than just a game, Atuel offers an experiential journey where you transform into various animals and elements of the ecosystem, seamlessly blending into the landscape.
You might find yourself soaring through the sky one moment, then flowing as the river itself the next. The game enriches your experience with real-life interviews from historians, biologists, geologists, and local residents, who share insights on the region's history, its current condition, and the looming impact of climate change.
Matajuegos teamed up with the international documentary team, The 12.01 Project, to weave these compelling stories into the gameplay. The visuals, inspired by the Cuyo desert, lend an almost otherworldly feel to the landscapes.
While Android pre-registration is yet to open, you can visit the Steam page or the official website for more details. Upon its mobile release, Atuel will feature localization in seven new languages and full controller support.
