The San Francisco 49ers have severed ties with Dr Disrespect following his admission of sending inappropriate messages to a minor on Twitch. This is the latest in a series of sponsors dropping the streamer after details surrounding his 2020 Twitch ban emerged.
On June 21st, former Twitch executive Cody Conners alleged Dr Disrespect, whose real name is Herschel "Guy" Beahm IV, was banned for "sexting a minor" via Twitch Whispers. Initially, Dr Disrespect denied wrongdoing. However, he later admitted to exchanging inappropriate messages with a minor on June 25th.
49ers End Relationship With Dr Disrespect
In response to this admission, the San Francisco 49ers ended their relationship with Dr Disrespect. A team representative told Digiday, "We take these developments seriously and will not be working with him going forward." The 49ers' estimated $6 billion valuation makes them the largest sponsor to drop him so far. While the financial impact is unclear, Dr Disrespect had collaborated extensively with the team, including marketing campaigns and announcing draft picks.
This abrupt end to his association with the 49ers, a team he's a lifelong fan of, mirrors his 2020 departure from Twitch. Other companies have also distanced themselves, including gaming accessory maker Turtle Beach, and Midnight Society, a game development company he co-founded.
Prior to these sponsorship losses, Dr Disrespect announced a streaming hiatus, stating his intention to return soon in a June 25th statement.
