This concludes my retro game eShop series, primarily due to dwindling retro consoles with diverse game libraries. However, I saved the best for last: the PlayStation. Sony's debut console exceeded all expectations, creating a legendary game library still seeing re-releases. While these titles initially challenged Nintendo, they're now enjoyed across various platforms. Here are ten favorites (in no particular order):
Klonoa, a deserving yet underrated 2.5D platformer, stars a charming floppy-eared creature journeying through a dream world to thwart a dangerous threat. It boasts vibrant visuals, tight gameplay, memorable bosses, and a surprisingly impactful narrative. While the PlayStation 2 sequel is slightly inferior, both are bundled together.
A monumental JRPG, Final Fantasy VII introduced the genre to a wider Western audience, becoming Square Enix's greatest success and propelling the PlayStation to the top. While a remake exists, this original offers the classic FFVII experience, albeit with noticeable polygonal limitations. Its enduring appeal remains undeniable.
Metal Gear Solid revitalized a dormant franchise, launching it onto a much larger stage. Though later entries became more eccentric, the original remains a standout, offering engaging gameplay reminiscent of an action movie. The PlayStation 2 sequels are also available on Switch.
G-Darius successfully transitioned Taito's classic shooter series into 3D. While its polygonal graphics haven't aged flawlessly, the vibrant colors, unique enemy capture mechanic, and inventive bosses make for a compelling shooter experience.
While overshadowed by its predecessor, Chrono Cross stands as a clever and visually stunning RPG with a large, albeit unevenly developed, cast of characters. Its soundtrack is also legendary.
From the Mega Man X series, X4 stands out for its polished gameplay. The Legacy Collection allows players to experience this and other titles in the series.
Tomba! is a unique platformer blending adventure game elements with engaging action. Created by the mind behind Ghosts ‘n Goblins, it starts easy but presents a significant challenge.
Originally a SEGA Saturn title, the PlayStation port of Grandia forms the basis of this HD release. Sharing a similar spirit to Lunar, it offers a bright, cheerful adventure with a satisfying combat system.
Lara Croft's PlayStation debut, this collection includes the first three games, allowing players to experience the evolution of the franchise.
A Japanese-only release until now, moon deconstructs the traditional RPG, offering a unique adventure game experience with a distinctive "punk" aesthetic and thought-provoking themes.
This concludes my list. What are your favorite PlayStation 1 games on the Switch? Share your thoughts below! Thank you for reading!
