Xbox Revives Friend Requests: A Decade-Long Wait Ends!
Xbox has finally restored the much-requested friend request system, ending a ten-year absence. This significant update addresses a long-standing community plea and marks a shift from the previous "follow" system.
A Two-Way Street: Control and Intentionality Return
Xbox Senior Product Manager, Klarke Clayton, announced the return, stating, "We’re thrilled to announce the return of friend requests. Friends are now a two-way, invite-approved relationship, giving you more control and flexibility." The People tab on Xbox consoles will once again facilitate sending, accepting, and declining friend requests.
The "follow" system, implemented on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, allowed users to view activity feeds without mutual consent. While fostering an open social environment, it lacked the control and clarity of friend requests. The distinction between friends and followers often proved ambiguous, leading to confusion.
The "follow" feature will remain for one-way connections, enabling users to track content creators or communities without reciprocal action. Existing friends and followers will be automatically categorized under the new system, maintaining existing connections.
Privacy Enhanced: Customizable Settings
Microsoft prioritizes user privacy. The updated system includes enhanced privacy and notification settings, allowing users to control friend requests, followers, and notifications via the Xbox settings menu.
Overwhelmingly Positive Reception
Social media erupted with positive feedback, with users expressing relief and humor at the return of this fundamental feature. Some users even admitted to being unaware of its absence!
Rollout and Xbox Insiders
While a precise release date is pending, the feature is currently in testing with Xbox Insiders on consoles and PC. A full rollout is expected later this year. Joining the Xbox Insiders program provides early access. Download the Xbox Insider Hub on your Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, or Windows PC to participate.
