Tencent, the Chinese technology giant, has reportedly secured a majority stake in Kuro Games, the developer behind the popular titles Wuthering Waves and Punishing: Gray Raven. This acquisition significantly alters the landscape for both companies.
Tencent's acquisition of roughly 37% of Kuro Games' shares boosts its overall ownership to 51.4%. This, coupled with the departure of other shareholders, grants Tencent controlling interest and makes it Kuro Games' sole external investor. This follows an initial investment made by Tencent in 2023.
Despite this significant investment, Kuro Games assures continued operational independence, mirroring Tencent's approach with Riot Games (League of Legends, Valorant) and Supercell (Clash of Clans, Brawl Stars). The company's official statement highlights that this move will foster a "more stable external environment" and facilitate its long-term independence strategy. Tencent has yet to release an official statement.
Kuro Games, a prominent Chinese game developer, has achieved considerable success with both Punishing: Gray Raven and Wuthering Waves. Each title has generated over $120 million USD in revenue and continues to receive regular updates. The recognition of Wuthering Waves with a Players' Voice nomination at The Game Awards further underscores its achievements.
