Recent reports suggest a potential April 2025 launch for Nintendo's Switch 2, while Nintendo maintains its focus on maximizing sales of the current Switch model.
The much-anticipated Switch 2's release might not occur before April 2025, according to industry insider Chris Dring of GamesIndustry.biz. Dring, citing conversations with game developers, reports they've been advised not to expect a launch within the current fiscal year (ending March 2025). Many developers are reportedly hoping for an April or May launch.
This potential launch window could be strategically timed to avoid competition with other major releases, such as the anticipated launch of Rockstar Games' "GTA 6" in the fall of 2025. Further fueling speculation, journalist Pedro Henrique Lutti Lippe hinted on the O X do Controle podcast that a Switch 2 announcement might arrive before August's end. This aligns with Nintendo's stated intention to announce the successor before the end of their fiscal year (March 31, 2025). However, these remain unconfirmed until official word from Nintendo.
image via Google Finance Nintendo's recent financial report revealed a dip in Switch sales and overall revenue. While Q1 FY2025 saw a significant year-on-year decline in Switch hardware and software sales (-46.4%), 2.1 million units were still sold during the quarter. This follows a strong year for the Switch in 2024, exceeding sales forecasts with 15.7 million units sold.
Despite the sales dip, Nintendo highlighted over 128 million annual active users for the Switch family of systems between July 2023 and June 2024. This demonstrates continued engagement with the current console. Nintendo reaffirmed its commitment to maximizing both hardware and software sales for the Switch in FY2025, projecting sales of 13.5 million units. The company plans to continue maximizing sales of the current Switch even with the impending arrival of its successor.
