Reliable sources indicate the Nintendo Switch 2 will be officially unveiled on Thursday, January 16th, 2025. This early 2025 reveal strongly suggests a first-half 2025 release. The timing echoes the original Switch announcement, which also occurred on a Thursday in 2016.
The Switch 2's existence has been an open secret for some time. Reports suggest mass production commenced in late September or early October 2024, corroborated by numerous hardware leaks. Nintendo itself previously committed to an announcement before March 31st, 2025. NateTheHate, a reputable leaker, confirmed the January 16th date, a claim independently supported by Tom Warren of The Verge.
While a pre-announcement teaser on social media, similar to the original Switch's rollout, remains a possibility, the sheer volume of leaks makes a surprise reveal unlikely. The influx of unofficial information has even prompted Nintendo to publicly address a Switch 2 replica, a rare acknowledgment of leaks.
Rumors suggest a slightly larger console than the Switch OLED, measuring approximately 270 x 116 x 14mm with an 8-inch LCD screen. Magnetically attaching Joy-Cons are anticipated, with the right Joy-Con potentially featuring a new "C" button below the home key, possibly linked to a rumored mouse-like pointer function.
Unlike the hardware details, the Switch 2's launch game lineup remains largely unknown. While titles like My Time at Evershine and Bestiario are confirmed, neither is expected as a day-one release. Nintendo is likely to include at least one or two major first-party titles to drive initial sales if the console launches in the first half of 2025.
