Nintendo's announcement of ending regular updates for Splatoon 3 has reignited speculation about a potential Splatoon 4. While the game isn't entirely abandoned – holiday events and necessary updates will continue – the news marks a significant shift.
The End of an Era (for Regular Updates)
Nintendo confirmed that regular content updates for Splatoon 3 are concluding. However, seasonal events like Splatoween and Frosty Fest will remain. Monthly challenges and weapon balance patches will also continue on an as-needed basis. The official Twitter (X) announcement stated: "After 2 INK-credible years of Splatoon 3, regular updates will come to a close. Don't worry! Splatoween, Frosty Fest, Spring Fest, and Summer Nights will continue with some returning themes! Updates for weapon adjustments will be released as needed. Big Run, Eggstra Work, and Monthly Challenges will continue for the time being."
This announcement followed the Grand Festival event on September 16th, commemorated by a video showcasing past Splatfests. Nintendo's farewell message, "Thanks for holding down the Splatlands with us, it's been a blast!", further fueled the anticipation for a sequel.
Splatoon 4: Rumors Intensify
With two years having passed since Splatoon 3's launch on September 9th, and Nintendo shifting its focus, rumors of a Splatoon 4 are reaching a fever pitch. Some players believe they've spotted potential easter eggs or hints within the Grand Festival event, suggesting a new city setting for the next installment. One fan commented on a post showcasing in-game images of a metropolitan area: "Doesn't look like Inkopolis. Perhaps the setting of Splatoon 4?" However, others remain unconvinced, pointing out similarities to existing locations.
While no official announcements have been made, reports earlier this year suggested Nintendo had begun development on a new Splatoon game for the Switch. The Grand Festival being the final major Splatfest for Splatoon 3 has only strengthened the belief that Splatoon 4 is imminent. Past Final Fests have often foreshadowed themes in subsequent sequels, leading to speculation about a "Past, Present, or Future" theme for Splatoon 4.
For now, the gaming community waits with bated breath for official confirmation from Nintendo regarding the future of the Splatoon franchise.
