Sony is phasing out PlayStation 4 games from its PlayStation Plus Essentials and Games Catalog starting January 2026, focusing its efforts on PlayStation 5 titles.
This shift, announced alongside February 2025's PlayStation Plus monthly games, reflects Sony's observation that a significant portion of its player base has transitioned to PS5. The blog post clarified that already-obtained PS4 games remain accessible, and existing Games Catalog titles will stay available until their scheduled removal. Future PS Plus monthly games and Games Catalog additions will primarily feature PS5 titles, with occasional PS4 offerings.
Sony assures subscribers that other PlayStation Plus benefits, such as discounts, online multiplayer, and cloud saves, will continue. The company anticipates enhancing the service with regular additions of new PS5 games.

With the PS5's release in 2020, following the PS4's 2013 debut, Sony notes a clear preference among its players for PS5 titles. The company hasn't specified whether PS4 games will transition to the Classics Catalog (currently featuring PS1, PS2, and PS3 titles), but further details are expected closer to the implementation date.
