'Last of Us' Season 2 to Unveil 'Graphic' Content Excised from Game

HBO's The Last of Us Season 2 will feature previously cut content from the video game The Last of Us Part II, according to showrunner Neil Druckmann. Druckmann revealed to Entertainment Weekly that the show will include "pretty brutal" scenes, notably elements from the game's "Lost Levels," partially restored in the PS5 remaster. These levels, including Jackson Party, The Hunt, and Seattle Sewers, offer a range of tones, from the relatively calmer party scene and boar hunt to the intense horror of Ellie's encounter with monsters in the Seattle sewers.

This restored content promises intense viewing. Druckmann hinted at a "pretty prominent" character, previously only mentioned in the game, making an appearance, echoing the Season 1 inclusion of Frank.

Season 2 introduces numerous new characters, including Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, Danny Ramirez as Manny, and Tati Gabrielle as Mel. Catherine O'Hara's role remains a mystery.

The first episode premieres in April, but the story's scope suggests a longer narrative arc. Unlike Season 1, which adapted the first game completely, Part II's extensive story will likely span multiple seasons. Showrunner Craig Mazin stated that Season 2, comprising seven episodes, concludes with a "natural breakpoint," leaving the possibility of a Season 3 open, though not yet confirmed.
