Respawn Entertainment, the developer behind Apex Legends, has canceled an unannounced incubation project, resulting in layoffs. This news, initially reported by Insider Gaming, citing a LinkedIn post from a former production coordinator, has been independently confirmed by IGN.
The canceled project was a multiplayer FPS, evidenced by a job posting from last year. It was developed by a team previously working on a Star Wars FPS at Respawn, a project also canceled in 2023. While the exact number of layoffs remains unconfirmed, sources describe it as a “small” number of individuals. At least one individual connected to the project has clarified on LinkedIn that their departure was voluntary.
This cancellation follows a pattern of project cancellations and layoffs at EA, beginning in 2023 with job cuts at BioWare and Codemasters. Last year, EA laid off 670 employees company-wide, including approximately two dozen at Respawn, and shut down several projects, including the aforementioned Star Wars FPS. Further restructuring at BioWare involved internal developer reassignments and additional, unspecified layoffs.
