First introduced in 2010 as a complimentary service to compete with Xbox Live, PlayStation Plus has undergone major changes since its launch. Today's PlayStation Plus is a subscription-based service for PS5 and PS4 players, which is essential for online multiplayer, but also includes tiered plans with extra perks like downloadable game libraries, cloud streaming, and more.
Previously, Sony offered free trials for newcomers to try its online service, but currently, PlayStation Plus does not provide any free trial options.
Though PlayStation Plus free trials aren’t available universally, Sony’s website notes that select countries or regions may occasionally have access to time-limited trials. The company doesn't disclose exactly who qualifies or when these trials will be offered, so you'll need to stay alert. Additionally, PlayStation sometimes hosts free multiplayer weekends that don’t require a PS Plus subscription, though these events remain largely unpredictable.
PlayStation also occasionally runs promotions on PS Plus subscriptions, though these are usually restricted to new or returning members — existing subscribers tend to miss out.
There's no true substitute for PS Plus when it comes to playing online on a PlayStation 5 or 4, but several other services offer free trials or low-cost access to streaming game libraries. Keep in mind that nearly all of these alternatives are only available on other platforms—such as PC, a different console, or a mobile device.
