Sony addressed widespread user frustration after a recent PS5 update filled the console's home screen with promotional content.
Sony announced on X (formerly Twitter) that a technical issue affecting the PS5's Official News feature has been resolved. The company stated, "There have been no changes to the way game news is displayed on PS5."
This followed significant negative feedback from PlayStation users. A recent update resulted in the PS5 home screen displaying numerous ads and promotional artwork, along with outdated news items. The promotional material consumed a considerable portion of the screen real estate. Users voiced their displeasure online, noting that the changes seemed to have been gradually implemented over several weeks, culminating with the latest update.
The PS5 home screen now reportedly features art and news related to the user's currently focused game. Despite Sony's response, some users remain critical, calling the changes a "terrible decision." One user commented, "This impacts all my games; the background images are replaced with poor-quality thumbnails from the news feed, obscuring the unique art that gave each game its own feel. I hope this is reversed or an opt-out option is added quickly." Another stated, "It's baffling that anyone's defending this. Why pay $500 for unwanted ads?"
