NetEase Games is making significant adjustments to the post-launch roadmap for Marvel Rivals, aiming to keep the game's momentum alive with its player base. The new strategy involves shortening the length of seasons and ensuring the introduction of at least one new hero each month. This shift was previewed in the Marvel Rivals Season 2 Dev Vision Vol. 5 video, which also introduced the new Vanguard, Emma Frost, set to launch on April 11, and Ultron, slated for a mid-season debut with his class to be revealed later. Both characters promise exciting new abilities, but the real transformation in gameplay dynamics is expected to start with Season 3.
Starting with Season 3, which has no fixed release date yet, NetEase plans to reduce season lengths from three months to two. This change will accelerate the pace of major content updates while maintaining the commitment to release a new hero every half-season. This means a shorter wait time for new heroes after Emma Frost and Ultron, enhancing the game's appeal and engagement.
In the Dev Vision video, Marvel Rivals' creative director, Guangyun Chen, shared insights into the decision-making process, stating, "Since the launch of Season 1, we’ve been deeply contemplating how Marvel Rivals can continuously deliver fun and engaging experiences for you all. Social media feedback has added pressure to keep the game exciting, and we agree with the need for change." Chen emphasized that the goal is to keep the audience's excitement at the level seen during the game's opening months, marking the beginning of a new adventure with Marvel Rivals.
NetEase's vision for Marvel Rivals includes fulfilling players' fantasies about Marvel Super Heroes through new modes and a diverse roster of characters. After extensive internal discussions and evaluations, the company plans to adjust its systems to handle the increased content flow. More details on how these changes will impact players will be shared before Season 3's launch.
Just hours ago, NetEase pulled back the curtain on Marvel Rivals Season 2, announcing a shift from the vampire takeover theme to a new storyline centered around the Hellfire Gala. This update will bring new outfits, maps, and characters, with more information to be released in the coming weeks.
Since its launch on December 6 across PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S, Marvel Rivals has been a massive success, drawing 10 million players in just three days. The game saw a peak of 480,990 concurrent players on Steam at launch, and Season 1 in January attracted 644,269 concurrent players, making it the 15th most-played game on Valve's platform. However, player numbers have been declining, prompting NetEase to revise its roadmap. Despite the dip, Marvel Rivals remains highly popular and ranks among Steam's top games. The launch of Season 2 and the anticipated Season 3 are expected to reinvigorate player interest.
