The highly anticipated God of War live-action TV series is undergoing a significant creative overhaul. Several key producers have departed, leading to a complete reboot of the project. Continue reading for details on the departures and Sony and Amazon's revised plans.
Recent reports confirm the departure of showrunner Rafe Judkins and executive producers Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus. Despite having completed multiple scripts, Sony and Amazon have opted for a different creative vision.
However, the project is not canceled. Cory Barlog (Santa Monica Studio's Creative Director), Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan (PlayStation Productions), Roy Lee (Vertigo), and Yumi Yang (Santa Monica Studio) will continue as executive producers. The search is now underway for a new showrunner, producers, and writers to steer the series in a new direction.
Initially announced on a PlayStation podcast in 2022, the Amazon and Sony collaboration for the God of War adaptation followed the immense success of the 2018 game reboot. This project is part of Sony's broader strategy to adapt its popular video game franchises into film and television, a strategy that led to the creation of PlayStation Productions in 2019. The initiative also includes a Netflix adaptation of Horizon Zero Dawn, among other projects.
Other successful adaptations already released include Uncharted (2022), The Last of Us (2023 – with a second season slated for 2025), Gran Turismo (2023), and Twisted Metal (2024). Furthermore, several projects are in development, including Gravity Rush, Ghost of Tsushima, Days Gone, and the upcoming Until Dawn film (April 25, 2025).
