Oblivion Remake Hints Emerge: Unreal Engine 5 and 2025 Release Speculation

A LinkedIn profile belonging to a game developer strongly suggests an Oblivion remake is underway, fueling ongoing speculation about its imminent reveal. The rumor mill has churned for years regarding a potential Oblivion remake or remaster, with recent leaks adding weight to the claims.

A 2023 rumor predicted a 2024 or 2025 release. Xbox insider Jez Corden further fueled the fire in late December 2024, suggesting a January 2025 unveiling during an Xbox Developer Direct. Although unconfirmed, the precedent of Developer Directs in January 2023 and 2024 makes this a plausible scenario.

Crucially, a Technical Art Director at Virtuos, the studio reportedly involved, states on their LinkedIn profile involvement in an "unannounced Unreal Engine 5 remake for PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S." While not explicitly named, the context and engine specification strongly point towards Oblivion, suggesting a full remake rather than a simple remaster—a departure from earlier speculation. A Fallout 3 remaster was also rumored in late 2023, but its current status remains unclear.

The Case for an Oblivion Remake: LinkedIn Evidence

The 2006 release of Oblivion, the sequel to 2002's Morrowind, garnered significant praise for its expansive world, visuals, and soundtrack. Since 2012, the dedicated Skyblivion modding community has been working on recreating Oblivion within Skyrim's engine. Their recent video update hints at a potential 2025 release for this ambitious project.

The Elder Scrolls franchise's future remains somewhat shrouded in mystery. The only trailer for Elder Scrolls 6, released in 2018, has left fans yearning for updates. Bethesda Game Studios has indicated it will follow Starfield, with director Todd Howard suggesting a release window "15 to 17 years after Skyrim." While a concrete release date is still a ways off, many anticipate a new trailer before the end of 2025. The convergence of these factors significantly increases the likelihood of an Oblivion remake announcement in the near future.
